During this new docu night Shelter City Utrecht will showcase the inspiriting story of Victor Hugo Moreno Mina, a Colombian social leader of Afro-Colombian communities in the North of Cauca. Since a young age he is defending black people’s ethnic and territorial rights.

Although Afro-Colombians constitute about 10% of the national population, they are disproportionately the victims of murders and forced displacements. Also in Cauca, where Victor Hugo is from, many Afro-Colombian communities are caught in the middle of fighting between guerrillas, drug-traffickers, the state, paramilitaries and multinational corporations. Hopes were high that the Peace Agreement that was signed in 2016 would bring an end to the decades long conflict in Colombia. Unfortunately, it seems to not have had a significant impact on the safety and security of human rights defenders in the country. To present, Colombia continues to be one of the most dangerous countries for social leaders and human rights defenders. To raise awareness on human rights violations that are happening in Colombia, we organize the screening of two short documentaries:

Sonic Forest (30 min) & Shelter City Utrecht: Victor Hugo Moreno Mina (7 min)

Following the screening, we will discuss the situation more in-depth. Victor Hugo Moreno Mina, joins us in Filmcafe to tell us more.

The event will be broadcasted live from PBI-Netherland's Facebook event page on Thursday, December 10th 2020 at 1:30 PM EST.
