Inter-American Court Case on Drug War Disappearances in Mexico Underway

May 10, 2018

The Inter-American Court in Costa Rica is hearing a case involving three people disappeared in Chihuahua in 2009 as part of Mexico’s war on drugs. The case, known as the Alvarado Espinoza case, is drawing attention to the plague of disappearances in Mexico, many of which are believed to have been carried out by the security forces. In Mexico an estimated 35,000 people have disappeared in the last ten years, since Plan Merida was adopted. Nongovernmental organizations concerned about Mexico’s Internal Security Law are hoping that the Inter-American Court will use the opportunity of the case to make a statement on the detrimental effect militarized security policies have on human rights.
