PBI accompanies Tlachinollan to tour in the USA

From 10 to 15 October, PBI accompanied Isidoro Vicario Aguilar, lawyer of the Human Rights Center Tlachinollan in Guerrero, during a visit to Washington, DC. Isidoro Vicario met with staff from the US Senate and Congress, State Department and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR). He also had meetings with Juan Mendez, Special Rapporteur on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, and a number of organizations such as WOLA, LAWG and the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights. Isidoro Vicario outlined the context of violence in the state of Guerrero, where on October 4 six people were murdered, including two students from the 'Normal Raúl Isidro Burgos' of Ayotzinapa. Additionally, the lawyer emphasized the risk for human rights defenders working in Guerrero. PBI accompanies Tlachinollan since 2003 for the risk members of the organization face.

During the visit, special attention was given to the Ayotzinapa case, since 26 September marked the second anniversary of the disappearance of the 43 students. On 25 October, the IACHR announced that the Follow-Up Mechanism to the recommendations of the Interdisciplinary Group of Independent Experts (GIEI) will conduct its first visit to Mexico on November 9 to 12. The visit will have the participation of the IACHR President, Commissioner James Cavallaro, the Rapporteur for Mexico, Commissioner Enrique Gil Botero, and the Executive Secretary, Paulo Abrão. During the visit, the delegation will conduct activities in Mexico City and in Ayotzinapa.
