On November 7, PBI-Honduras tweeted:

“Last week we were able to see the effects of the floods at the Dagoberto Padilla Base, Guanchías Sector, El Progreso. The community shares that they have been denouncing the situation for years and are calling for the construction of high-quality embankments on the Ulúa River.”

On Facebook, they added:

“Last week we visited the Dagoberto Padilla Base, in the Guanchias Sector, El Progreso. We were able to see first-hand the effects of flooding in the area after Hurricane Julia.

Peasant bases in the area had already been affected two years ago by hurricanes Eta and Iota, and since then they’ve had problems planting. The community shares with us that from the Guanchias sector, they have been denouncing the state of the Ulúa River for years, and they continue to call for good-quality edges to be built so future disasters can be prevented.

From PBI we emphasize the work done by the CNTC Yoro in defense of land, territory, and food sovereignty.”

Dagoberto Padilla was a trade unionist murdered in 1983.

PBI-Honduras has accompanied the National Union of Rural Workers (CNTC) since May 2018.

The CNTC is affiliated with the Unified Confederation of Honduran Workers (CUTH) which in turn is affiliated with the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), along with 150+ labor organizations including the Canadian Labour Congress.
