PBI is deeply saddened about the killing of Berta Cáceres. We would like to express our condolences to the family and colleagues of Berta who continue in their struggle despite the risks they face.
See below some reactions:
Senator Patrick Leahy: “Ms. Caceres was an inspiration to people around the world, and her death is a great loss for all the people of Honduras. The immediate question is what President Hernandez and his government -- which has too often ignored or passively condoned attacks against Honduran social activists -- will do to support an independent investigation, prosecution, and punishment of those responsible for this despicable crime."
Senator Ben Cardin, Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee: “President Hernandez and Attorney General Chinchilla must take all necessary steps to investigate Ms. Caceres’ murder and ensure that the perpetrators of this horrendous crime swiftly be brought to justice."
The Guardian “Her death prompted international outrage at the murderous treatment of campaigners in Honduras, as well as a flood of tributes to a prominent and courageous defender of the natural world.”
