Peace Accord implementation has been slow and lacking in many areas, especially as the country has turned its attention to presidential elections, which will be held in Colombia on May 27th. Some progress, however, has been made. Luz Marina Monzon has been appointed head of the Search Unit for Disappeared Persons (Unidad de Busqueada para las Personas Desaparecidas), which must be set up as mandated by the Peace Accords.
The following is from an interview conducted in 2017 with Olga Silva by PBI UK.
It is an understatement to say that 2016 has been challenging for human rights defenders. And it would be naive not to anticipate an even more challenging 2017 ahead. Peace Brigades International chapters and projects worldwide are always working to prepare for the unknown, but now it is more important than ever that we do so.
This year in Colombia, human rights defenders and social leaders have faced 232 threats, 21 attacks and 70 assassinations, 31 of which occurred after the bilateral ceasefire with the FARC went into effect.
On this International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, PBI recognizes the challenges that victims of enforced disappearances face and we also celebrate their resilience.
